One of my favorite details to talk through with my couples is how much your venue shapes the whole feel of your reception photos. An open-air reception under string lights tells such a different story than a candlelit ballroom. Neither one is “better”, of course. It’s all about the night you’re picturing for yourselves and with your loved ones on your wedding day.

So if you’re still deciding between an indoor, outdoor or “give me both” kind of reception, here are a few of my favorite Austin-area venues and what makes each of them so special.

Woodbine Mansion

Woodbine has quickly become of my favorite Austin wedding venues to photograph and it’s easy to see why.

Indoor space: The mansion’s first floor interior is grand and filled with original chandeliers, three fireplaces, tall windows and stunning rooms that make for a beautiful candlelit reception.

Outdoor space: The turfed trellis lawn is draped in wisteria vines, with a private rose garden and gazebo. String lights strung through the trees make it just as magical after dark.

Villa Antonia

If you’re ready for an Austin wedding reception that feels like a trip to Tuscany, look no further than Villa Antonia. This venue is so unique and truly looks like you’re entering a castle upon arrival.

Indoor space: The Chapel transforms from ceremony space into an elegant dance hall come reception time. Their other indoor option, The Wine Cellar Ballroom, with its waterfall and koi pond, is another gorgeous indoor option for dinner.

Outdoor space: The Lakeview Terrace overlooks the Hill Country and Lake Travis, while the Courtyard and Rose Garden provide a romantic cocktail hour or ceremony option.

Prospect House

For Austin couples who love modern architecture, Prospect House might be the best fit for your wedding reception.

Indoor space: The Main Hall is the go-to for an indoor reception, while the glass-enclosed Gallery is a serene, light-filled option for a ceremony or cocktail hour (and doubles as a gorgeous weather backup, if needed).

Outdoor space: The Patio is a smaller, more intimate space that is perfect for cocktail hours to smaller wedding events. There is also direct guest access to The Main Hall.

The Arlo

The Arlo gives you serious flexibility with multiple indoor and outdoor spaces to choose from.

Indoor space: Storie Hall is a dreamy indoor ceremony space with an 18-foot window and wood trusses overhead. While The Ballroom has a 22-foot coffered ceiling and is where the reception dancing will happen.

Outdoor space: The Lawn and Courtyard are perfect for an outdoor celebration under the oaks, complete with an outdoor fireplace for cooler evenings.

The Grand Lady

This Austin reception venue truly gives you the best of both words, with a historic 1881 mansion paired with a bright, modern reception hall. It’s the perfect mix of romantic and modern.

Indoor space: The skylit reception hall is bright and modern, with floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the space with natural light.

Outdoor space: The ceremony lawn and garden pergola are framed by heritage oaks, perfect for an outdoor ceremony or cocktail hour before heading inside.

Barr Mansion

Barr Mansion is a favorite for Austin couples who want flexibility without sacrificing charm. You can move your celebration indoors or out without ever losing that romantic charm.

Indoor space: The glass-walled Artisan Ballroom brings the outdoors in, with a hand-hewn timber frame and plenty of natural light.

Outdoor space: Ceremonies happen under the pecan tree or out on the front lawn, and the open-air Farmstead Pavilion is perfect for cocktails or an al fresco dinner surrounded by the gardens. If you have a small or intimate reception, ask the Barr Mansion staff about the possibility of a Farmstead Pavilion option for your reception.

Camp Lucy

Camp Lucy offers a few completely different vibes depending on which space you choose.

Indoor space: At Sacred Oaks, the timber-framed Great Hall is beautiful for a reception, with rustic wood beams overhead.

Outdoor space: The ceremony site beneath the ancient, light-strung oaks is just as magical and the neighboring Vineyard offers a totally different, wide-open outdoor option too.

Vineyards at Chappel Lodge

Surrounded by wildflower fields, live oaks and a vineyard, this Austin venue leans into a natural, romantic feel. Your guests can move seamlessly from the ceremony under the oaks straight into the celebration.

Indoor space: The Lodge offers an elegant, intimate indoor setting for a ceremony or reception, with stylish, timeless interiors.

Outdoor space: The reception tent and courtyard sit right in the middle of the estate’s 53 acres, surrounded by live oaks and vineyard views.

Austin Gives The Best of the Best in Indoor and Outdoor Reception Options

Here’s what I love about every venue on this list: they all give you indoor and outdoor spaces, so you don’t have to pick just one mood for your day. Say “I do” outside beneath the oaks, then move the party indoors for a candlelit reception. Or, you can flip it and have an elegant indoor ceremony, followed by dancing under the stars.
